FORMER SC TAG DIES Retired Army Maj. Gen. Stanhope Spears, a former adjutant general of South Carolina and NGAUS board member, died July 14. He was 83. Spears was South Carolina’s adjutant general from 1995 to 2011. At the time, it was an elected position. He served on the NGAUS board from 1997 to 2000. He began his career in the South Carolina Air Guard in 1959 after graduating from the University of South Carolina before transferring to the Army Guard two years later. Spears was interred July 18 at Clover Cemetery in Clover, South Carolina.
